What is Gastric Banding?
Adjustable Gastric Banding is a laparoscopic procedure, a form of restrictive weight loss surgery which is indicated for obese patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) equal to 40 or more. A Gastric Band is inserted on n the top portion of the stomach.
How is This Procedure Performed?
This procedure creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach which fills with food quickly thus sending a message to the brain that the stomach is full, causing the patient to eat less and thus, there is weight loss over time. The Gastric Band, an inflatable silicone prosthetic device, is placed on the stomach through laparoscopic surgery.
The procedure lasts for about 3 hours under general anesthesia. Post-operative pain is tolerable and can be relieved by medication.
Length of hospital stay is 2 nights. Follow-up with the surgeon is done a week after the surgery to assess for immediate complications and for removal of sutures.
